Biography

Carl joined the firm in 1995, known then as Neil Myerson & Co and became a Partner in 1999.

As CEO, Carl is responsible for leading the firm’s business strategy, vision, culture, people management and business support functions, providing strategic guidance to all fee earning and non-fee earning departments.

He leads the Board, Partners, Heads of Department and Business Services Managers to advance client and employee engagement, developing high performing managerial and exceptional client service delivery teams.

Demonstrating his strong leadership, Carl focuses on investing in people and democratising various functions throughout the firm, enabling employee participation.  This has positively impacted the culture of the firm, the motivation of its people and thus its performance.

Carl has significantly bolstered the profile and reputation of Myerson within the professional services industry, championing the brand and engendering an entrepreneurial spirit within the firm to create smart, efficient and flexible working practices, which in turn generate a positive working environment.  He successfully introduced the firm’s operating system (EOS, inspired by the book Traction, Gino Wickman) which has enabled Myerson to further improve its collegiate way of working with a focus on providing efficient, transparent leadership and accountability to its clients as a trusted advisor.

Prior to becoming the Firm’s Managing Partner and then CEO, Carl was for many years the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Department at Myerson.  After gaining a first-class honours degree from Lancaster University and first-class honours on the Law Society Finals course, he trained at Addleshaw Goddard in Manchester and joined Myerson as a Corporate/Commercial lawyer in 1995.

In 2025, Carl was recognised in The Lawyer’s Hot 100 list for 2025 for “shaping the landscape of employee ownership,” leading Myerson’s transition to Manchester’s first employee-owned law firm while driving growth and advising businesses on similar transformations.

Carl champions the law industry at Myerson and is a non-executive director of the UK 200 group, mentoring and inspiring other law and accountancy firms from across the UK.  (The UK 200 group is made of independent chartered accountants, and law firms with connections around the world aiming to ‘build a better together’).

The Lawyer Hot 100 for 2025:

"Carl Newton is shaping the landscape of employee ownership. As CEO of Myerson Solicitors, he led the firm through its transition to become Manchester’s first employee-owned law firm in 2024 — a huge move that consumed much of his year. The impact is already evident: Myerson is now advising businesses and other law firms such as Progression Solicitors and Home Legal Direct on similar transitions, solidifying its position as a leading name in employee ownership conversions across the North West.

Beyond this shift, Newton has kept his sights firmly on growth. Under his leadership, Myerson has achieved double-digit revenue increases for four consecutive years, or 84 per cent, from £9.5m in 2019/20 to £17.5m in 2023/24. The plan for the year ahead aim is to break the £20m barrier, fuelled by an expanded corporate offering and strategic hires in areas like commercial property.

But Newton’s leadership extends beyond Myerson. As chair of the UK200 Group, he has spent the past two years steering a network of top law and accountancy firms, welcoming new members such as Paris Smith and guiding the organisation to its 40th anniversary.

There are also plans to deliver the firm’s first tax-free employee bonuses and cement its position as the North West’s leader in employee ownership work. Newton’s approach to leadership ensures that milestones — and the opportunities they create — continue to define his tenure."

Declan Swan, UK 200, Chief Executive Officer:

“Carl has been instrumental in bringing together law firms within the UK 200 group, whilst demonstrating great leadership and collaboration with those firms.

His knowledge within the industry is second to none, and he openly shares his experiences with other UK 200 firms, which is greatly appreciated by the law firms.  He is an asset to the UK 200 group, and with his leadership and support, we have been able to grow the group successfully.”
