Myerson Head Office v2

Myerson Solicitors has announced the successful transition of its client, Home Legal Direct, to employee-ownership.

Home Legal Direct, headquartered in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, maintains a network of conveyancing firms to bring clients competitive rates, with a safety net against costly surprises.

Providing upfront quotes based on flat rates and not hourly charges, Home Legal Direct takes the stress out of selecting and instructing a conveyancer. Since its establishment in 2017 by two industry experts, Peter Joseph and Oliver Meddick, the company has helped thousands of movers across England and Wales.

Home Legal Direct is now majority-owned by an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), which now holds the company’s share capital on behalf of the company’s employees (creating in-direct employee ownership), while the day-to-day management of the company remains unchanged.

Oliver Meddick, co-founder and Chief Operations Officer of Home Legal Direct, comments:

“Becoming employee-owned not only empowers our people and secures our future but also strengthens our commitment to providing excellent service to our clients. After exploring several succession planning options, we found that the EOT model was the best way forward, offering attractive benefits for both us as selling shareholders and our employees. We are very grateful for the expertise and guidance provided by Terry Moore, Simon Nolan, and the rest of the Myerson team.”

Terry Moore, Partner in the Corporate Team at Myerson adds:

“We are thrilled to have assisted Home Legal Direct in their conversion to employee ownership. This decision not only secures the long-term growth, values, and autonomy of the business but also reinforces their commitment to a supportive and inclusive workplace culture by placing ownership in the hands of an Employee Ownership Trust for the benefit of all employees.”

Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) were established under the Finance Act 2014 to promote employee ownership as a viable business model in the UK by offering a range of beneficial tax reliefs.

There are now over 1,800 employee-owned businesses in the UK, and this number is growing rapidly, with employee-owned businesses experiencing a remarkable 30% growth last year.

Myerson’s corporate and employment lawyers have extensive experience advising clients of all sizes across various sectors on the establishment and implementation of EOTs. The firm itself successfully transitioned to 100% employee ownership in September 2024.
